Alexander Robert Macdonald to be sentenced for 1990s bank robberies

Alexander Robert Macdonald, a 76-year-old criminal with a history of violent offenses, is scheduled to be sentenced on September 30 at the Port Macquarie Courthouse. Macdonald has pleaded guilty to two bank robberies committed in regional New South Wales during the 1990s.

One of the robberies occurred in October 1996 at a Commonwealth Bank branch in Coonabarabran. During that incident, Macdonald, armed with a sawn-off shotgun, used a 22-year-old woman as a human shield to reach his getaway motorbike. He had previously escaped from a Queensland jail while serving a 22-year sentence for armed robbery.

During recent court proceedings, Macdonald requested to appear virtually due to physical disabilities that require the use of a walker. However, Acting Judge Michael King ruled that Macdonald must attend the sentencing in person. A victim of the robberies has expressed a desire to be present at the sentencing to witness the proceedings.
