Alexander Rossi cleared to race in Indy 500 after crash

Driver Alexander Rossi has been medically cleared to compete in the Indianapolis 500 despite a high‑speed practice crash on Monday that left him with a non‑weight‑bearing injury to his right ankle and a lacerated left middle finger. He underwent outpatient procedures at an in‑field medical centre and a local hospital, then completed a series of functional tests, including simulator runs and rapid entry‑exit drills, to prove he could operate the car safely while using a race boot and a brace for his foot.

Rossi confirmed he feels “99 percent” fit, noting that pain is minimal and his range of motion is good. Ed Carpenter Racing will field a backup Chevrolet for Sunday, but under IndyCar rules the car retains its original grid position – second on the starting line behind pole‑sitter Alex Palou. Rossi expects to take part in Friday’s practice session and will be on crutches for non‑racing activities, but the injuries will not impede his ability to drive at speed.

The incident sparked brief concerns about a possible concussion and the need for a replacement driver, but the medical clearance and the team’s preparations ensure Rossi remains in contention for the race.
