Germany's Schweitzer seeks compromise on pension reform

New German Federal Labor Minister Alexander Schweitzer is seeking a compromise regarding the controversial pension reform, specifically concerning the 'Rente mit 63' (pension at 63). The debate centers on the potential abolition of the pension without deductions for those with 45 years of contributions, a measure recommended by the Pension Commission.

While the Pension Commission proposed phasing out this early retirement option, Schweitzer noted that the coalition agreement between the CDU and SPD originally intended to maintain it. He expressed confidence in reaching a consensus despite resistance from both sides, including several CDU state premiers and members of the SPD who emphasize the importance of recognizing long-term career contributions.

In parallel, SPD parliamentary leader Matthias Miersch stated that additional contribution increases cannot be ruled out to fund the pension system. Meanwhile, Chancellor Friedrich Merz has pressured the coalition to establish a clear reform roadmap, aiming for a cabinet decision by the end of the year and a final vote in the Bundestag early next year.
