Finland and Norway leaders hold phone call with Vladimir Putin FAST-MOVING

Finnish President Alexander Stubb and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre held a 90-minute phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss the conflict in Ukraine and regional security. The leaders stated the conversation was conducted in consultation with Ukraine and aimed to transmit direct messages ahead of planned trilateral negotiations between Russia, Ukraine, and the United States in Abu Dhabi this November.

During the discussion, Putin asserted that a lasting peace is only possible if Russia’s interests are fully and unconditionally addressed. He also blamed EU and NATO policies for prolonging the hostilities. Stubb described the dialogue as “honest and substantive,” while Støre emphasized the need for de-escalation and the human costs of the war. The leaders also addressed security and maritime stability in the Baltic Sea and Northern Europe.

The initiative has drawn criticism from Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, who expressed skepticism regarding the call, describing it as uncoordinated with other European partners and questioning whether it would yield concrete results.
