Alexander Stubb predicts new world order by 2030

Finnish President Alexander Stubb has predicted that a new world order will likely be established by 2030. In an interview with the Washington Post, Stubb described the current global landscape as a complex transition period between two different orders, characterizing the present state as a world of disorder and near chaos.

Regarding European security, Stubb suggested that NATO could adapt through a gradual redistribution of responsibilities. He argued that the United States should play a smaller role in European security, necessitating that European nations take on greater commitments and move toward increased autonomy. He emphasized that this transition should be phased to avoid creating gaps in collective defense.

To navigate this changing environment, Stubb advised European countries to diversify their external connections by strengthening trade agreements and relationships with India, South American nations, and the Persian Gulf. On the conflict in Ukraine, he expressed support for a ceasefire along current lines of contact followed by peace negotiations, while also advocating for increased support for Ukraine and caution regarding Russian hybrid threats.
