Alexander Stubb urges Musk to expand Starlink to target Russian missile launchers

Finnish President Alexander Stubb has called on SpaceX owner Elon Musk to expand Starlink satellite internet coverage to include Russian territory and occupied parts of Ukraine. Stubb stated that providing this access would allow Ukrainian forces to target mobile ballistic missile launchers, which could help save lives by preventing strikes on Ukraine.

Currently, Starlink service does not operate within Russia. Ukrainian officials believe extending coverage would enable attacks on launchers located hundreds of kilometers from the border. This request comes as Ukraine faces critical shortages of Patriot missile defense systems ahead of winter, a period when Russian attacks on energy infrastructure are anticipated.

Stubb identified three essential needs for Ukraine before winter: air defense, energy security, and funding. Regarding potential peace negotiations, he suggested that an unconditional ceasefire should be the first step, followed by discussions on security, territory, reconstruction, and reparations. One proposed option includes freezing the conflict along current battle lines with a 30-kilometer security zone established on both sides.
