Alexander Ullom’s horror debut ‘It Ends’ explores Gen Z existential dread

Alexander Ullom’s directorial debut, ‘It Ends’, is an indie horror-drama that explores existential dread and the transition into adulthood. The film follows four friends—James, Day, Fisher, and Tyler—who become trapped on a never-ending highway in a Jeep Cherokee during a late-night drive. As they realize they are driving in circles, they encounter mysterious threats emerging from the surrounding woods.

Produced on a micro-budget of approximately $30,000, the film was shot entirely in Florida, specifically in Tallahassee and Gainesville. To facilitate interior car scenes, the production utilized a virtual production facility at Florida State University, which required the filming vehicle to be disassembled and reassembled on a sound stage.

Released theatrically by Neon, the film has been noted for its ‘hangout horror’ style and its reflection of Gen Z’s post-graduation malaise. The cast features Phinehas Yoon, Akira Jackson, Noah Toth, and Mitchell Cole. Critics have described the work as a blend of psychological thriller and surrealism, focusing more on atmosphere and character dynamics than traditional action-heavy horror.
