Alexander Van der Bellen sparks tension with Russia remarks

Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen has sparked a diplomatic dispute after describing Russia as a “dwarf” that behaves like a “giant.” The remarks were made during the “Hofburg im Dialog” event in Vienna, where Van der Bellen was discussing European economic strength and the development of a European capital markets union alongside ECB President Christine Lagarde.

In his speech, Van der Bellen warned against the “self-dwarfing” of Europe, stating that the continent should not make itself appear smaller on the world stage than it actually is. He clarified, “Europe as a dwarf on the world stage? No, we are not dwarfs. But there is a dwarf that behaves like a giant: Russia.”

The Russian Embassy in Vienna responded sharply via social media, stating that such comments do not bring honor to a head of state. The embassy also noted that the sovereignty and independence of Austria were guaranteed by the Soviet Union, the legal predecessor to the Russian Federation.

The Russian response included a literary jab referencing Ivan Krylov’s fable “The Elephant and the Pug,” implying that Van der Bellen is like the small dog barking at an elephant to demonstrate strength. Russian diplomat Mikhail Ulyanov also questioned how the Austrian President would characterize his own country in light of the comparison.
