Alexander Villasmil wins opening stage of Vuelta Internacional a Zamora

Alexander Villasmil won the opening stage of the 27th Vuelta Internacional a Zamora in Venezuela, taking the first general classification lead. Competing for the Gobernación de Mérida-Banco del Tesoro team, Villasmil won the 149.4-kilometer stage in a mass sprint after the peloton neutralized several breakaway attempts.

The stage began at the El Cantón tourist boardwalk and concluded in Capitanejo. Villasmil finished with a time of 3 hours, 40 minutes, and 43 seconds, narrowly beating Kevin Roa and Pedro Sequera, who finished with the same time. Due to time bonuses, Villasmil holds a four-second lead over Roa and a six-second lead over Sequera in the overall standings.

In other categories, Arlex Méndez leads the under-23 classification and sits fourth in the general classification. The Alcaldía de Valera-Confitería La Guacamaya currently leads the team classification.
