Alexander Volkanovski proposes lightweight title fight with Justin Gaethje

UFC fighter Alexander Volkanovski has proposed a ‘superfight’ against Justin Gaethje for the lightweight championship. Volkanovski suggested the bout could serve as a final appearance for both fighters, allowing them to compete for a title before potentially retiring and leaving their respective divisions to move forward.

Analyst Luke Thomas has expressed skepticism regarding the UFC’s willingness to support such a matchup. Thomas questioned the promotional logic of allowing two champions to engage in a simultaneous retirement fight, noting potential matchmaking and financial challenges compared to traditional title defenses.

Volkanovski is currently scheduled to defend his featherweight title against Movsar Evloev on October 24, 2026, at the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi during UFC 333. He has indicated that his immediate focus remains on this defense, which will involve stricter nutrition and a focus on grappling exchanges.
