Alexander Zverev nears ATP world number one ranking in Vienna

Alexander Zverev is poised to become the world number one in the ATP rankings following a successful season that included titles at the French Open and US Open. If the 29-year-old German reaches the quarterfinals at the Erste Bank Open in Vienna, he will officially overtake Jannik Sinner in the rankings on November 2.

Zverev recently addressed a period of physical and mental exhaustion following his performance in Shanghai, where he lost to Alejandro Davidovich-Fokina. He noted that a five-day break involving golf helped him recover his energy before arriving in Vienna.

Jannik Sinner, the current leader, is unable to defend his points from the previous season due to a knee injury that has ended his 2026 campaign. This shift in points, combined with the upcoming Paris Masters, creates the opportunity for Zverev to achieve a historic milestone as only the second German man to hold the top ranking after Boris Becker.
