Alexandra Eala faces potential WTA sanctions over Asian Games participation
Tennis player Alexandra Eala faces potential sanctions from the WTA after choosing to represent the Philippines at the Asian Games in Japan rather than competing in the mandatory WTA 1000 China Open in Beijing.
Under WTA regulations, the Beijing tournament is compulsory for top-ranked players. Failure to participate without an approved exemption, such as a documented injury, can result in a fine of up to $10,000 and potential ranking penalties. The Philippine Tennis Association (PHILTA) and the Philippine Olympic Committee have submitted requests to the WTA for a formal exemption to protect the athlete from these penalties.
Tonette Mendoza, executive director of PHILTA, stated that Eala will proceed with her participation in the Asian Games regardless of the WTA's decision. The Asian Games are scheduled from September 19 to October 4, while the China Open runs from September 30 to October 11.
