Alexandra Eala faces WTA fine risk over Asian Games participation
Filipino tennis star Alexandra Eala faces potential sanctions from the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) due to a scheduling conflict between the Asian Games in Japan and the mandatory WTA 1000 China Open.
Eala, currently ranked 18th in the world, has committed to representing the Philippines at the Asian Games. However, the tournament overlaps with the China Open, a mandatory event for players of her ranking. The Philippine Tennis Association (PHILTA) has formally requested an exemption from the WTA to allow her participation in the Games without penalty.
Concerns regarding the exemption have grown following the news that Indonesian player Janice Tjen had her appeal rejected by the WTA, leading to her withdrawal from the Asian Games. If Eala’s request is denied, she could face a fine of up to $10,000 and a loss of critical ranking points.
In response to the situation, Philippine officials, including Senator Erwin Tulfo, have called for government support to assist Eala should she be fined for choosing to represent her country.
