Alexandra Eala wins opening match at Asian Games

At the Asian Games in Nagoya, Japan, Philippines tennis player Alexandra Eala began her pursuit of a gold medal with a dominant 6-1, 6-0 victory over Thailand’s Patcharin Cheapchandej. Due to rain, the match was moved to an indoor practice court. Eala, the top seed, is scheduled to face Taiwan’s Joanna Garland in the quarterfinals.

In boxing, Taiwan’s Lin Yu-ting secured at least a bronze medal in the women’s 60kg class after defeating North Korea’s Won Un Gyong. Lin, an Olympic champion, expressed her desire to continue competing following previous gender eligibility controversies involving the International Boxing Association.

Other notable results include Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage winning gold in men’s javelin. China continues to lead the medal standings with 129 gold medals, followed by host Japan and South Korea.
