Alexandra Shulman reveals role in Princess of Wales' wedding dress selection

Former British Vogue editor-in-chief Alexandra Shulman has revealed her involvement in helping Catherine, Princess of Wales, select a designer for her 2011 wedding dress. In her memoir, “Black Coffee and Red Lipstick: Notes on Living,” Shulman describes being approached by the royal office to discuss potential designers following the engagement of Catherine and Prince William.

Shulman considered several options, including Vivienne Westwood, Bruce Oldfield, Catherine Walker, Erdem, and Christopher Kane. She noted that while Westwood was a strong candidate, her personality might clash with the formality of the royal household. Traditional choices like Oldfield or Walker were viewed as potentially problematic due to their associations with the late Duchess of Cambridge.

Ultimately, Shulman recommended Sarah Burton of Alexander McQueen, believing her work would suit the Princess’s style while meeting royal expectations. Despite her advisory role, Shulman was kept under strict secrecy and did not learn that Burton had been selected until the wedding day at Westminster Abbey.
