Minas Gerais 2026 gubernatorial race sees Kalil nomination, coalition talks and poll slump for Patrus
The Democratic Labour Party (PDT) confirmed former Belo Horizonte mayor Alexandre Kalil as its candidate for the Minas Gerais governorship at a convention in Belo Horizonte on 26 July 2026. Kalil, cleared by the state court of previous corruption charges, will seek the office for a second time and his party is negotiating alliances with PSDB, Solidariedade, União Brasil, PP and other groups to broaden his coalition.
Lula’s chosen PT candidate, deputy Patrus Ananias, recorded low support in a Genial/Quaest poll, never exceeding 13 % of voter intention in any scenario, while the former senator Cleitinho Azevedo led with 34‑35 %.
Meanwhile, the PT is holding coalition talks with the PSB to potentially include Jarbas Soares as Ananias’s vice‑presidential running mate and to offer a Senate ticket to former Contagem mayor Marília Campos. The Brazilian Communist Party (PCB) also announced professor Túlio Lopes, with Warlen Nunes as his vice‑candidate, as its Minas Gerais gubernatorial contender.
