Severe storms cause power outages and flooding in Alexandria and Arlington
Severe thunderstorms caused widespread damage and power outages across Alexandria and Arlington. In Alexandria, power outages peaked at over 10,000 customers, including critical facilities like schools and nursing homes. The storm triggered flash flood warnings, leading to multiple water rescues, including five people rescued from the George Washington Memorial Parkway and two individuals stranded in a vehicle on E. Glebe Road.
Downed trees and electrical lines have blocked roads and impacted access to Inova Alexandria Hospital. In Arlington, a storm described by officials as a ‘25-year’ event left nearly 4,000 Dominion Energy customers without power, with outages peaking at approximately 20,000. High wind gusts of 60-70 mph caused fallen trees and downed wires, prompting emergency crews to prioritize clearing blocked major roads and arterial routes.
