Alexandria committee discusses School Board election reforms
An ad hoc committee composed of members from the Alexandria City Council and the Alexandria City School Board has begun discussions regarding potential election reforms for the School Board. During their first meeting, the committee reached a preliminary consensus on the possibility of increasing board member term lengths from three to four years.
Further discussions are planned to address other reform measures, including the staggering of terms and the overall size of the nine-member board. Because these changes would require a city charter amendment, the proposal must be submitted to the Virginia General Assembly. The committee aims to navigate these discussions ahead of the next School Board election scheduled for November 2027.
