Alexandria develops sustainable urban mobility plan
Alexandria Governor Ayman Attia led a meeting to advance the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) for the governorate. The initiative, conducted in cooperation with the National Authority for Tunnels and the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP), aims to create an integrated transport network that accommodates the city's urban expansion.
Key components of the plan include the rehabilitation of the Raml tram and its integration with major projects like the Abu Qir metro. The strategy focuses on restructuring the entire network so that buses and microbuses serve as feeder services for metro and tram stations, reducing reliance on private vehicles.
Additionally, the plan explores active mobility solutions, such as integrating bicycles into the public transport system to facilitate ‘last mile’ travel. Discussions also included improving pedestrian paths and providing organized parking for bicycles and motorcycles to ensure accessibility for people with disabilities.
