Alexandria hosts Anglican-Orthodox theological dialogue
The International Commission for Anglican-Orthodox Theological Dialogue (ICAOTD) has commenced its sessions at the Patriarchal Throne in Alexandria. The meeting is hosted by the Patriarchate of Alexandria and All Africa, under the leadership of Patriarch Theodore II.
The Orthodox delegation is co-chaired by Metropolitan Athanasios of Belgium, representing the Ecumenical Patriarchate, while the Anglican side is co-chaired by Bishop Michael Lewis. The choice of Alexandria as the venue highlights the city's historical role as a center for theological discourse and a bridge between different cultures and Christian traditions.
During the opening, Patriarch Theodore II emphasized that theological dialogue is not a diplomatic formality or an attempt at numerical expansion. Instead, he described it as a ministry of truth rooted in love, aimed at seeking unity. He also addressed the role of the Church in modern society, noting that mission work should focus on being present alongside people facing poverty, disease, and displacement, rather than imposing foreign cultural models. He further noted that while technology and artificial intelligence provide vast information, they cannot replace personal relationships, community, and human meaning.
