Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez criticizes Democrats over transgender rights

Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) criticized fellow Democrats during a town hall in Portland, Maine, accusing the party of abandoning transgender rights. Speaking at an event supporting Maine Senate candidate Troy Jackson, Ocasio-Cortez responded to a transgender student who claimed the Democratic Party had failed the community.

Ocasio-Cortez stated that compromising the rights of transgender individuals compromises the rights of all citizens. She expressed frustration with politicians who shift their stances on sensitive issues following elections. She further remarked, “I don’t support the rights of trans people just to protect my own rights, but I support the rights of trans women because I’m a girl’s girl.”

Her comments come as some Democrats have adjusted their positions on transgender issues following political pressure regarding gender identity in sports and medical procedures for minors.
