Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez rejoins Democratic Socialists of America

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has officially rejoined the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) in August 2026, following a seven-year lapse in her membership that began in 2019. The DSA confirmed she is now a member in good standing, noting that while she originally joined in 2018, her annual membership was not renewed until this month.

The organization stated that it took the unusual step of publicly clarifying her membership status due to ongoing discussions regarding a potential 2028 presidential campaign. With various chapters and members campaigning to draft Ocasio-Cortez as a candidate for the Democratic presidential primary, the DSA deemed her membership status essential information for members to have during their deliberations.

Ocasio-Cortez's re-engagement with the group comes amid growing speculation about her future political ambitions and a period of increased momentum for the DSA following several Democratic primary victories. The congresswoman has also recently commented on past political trends, referring to previous progressive movements as ‘Woke 1.0’ and describing them as ‘crazy’.
