Abdul El-Sayed faces scrutiny over Muslim Brotherhood allegations in Michigan Senate race

Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed is facing intense scrutiny in Michigan regarding alleged ties to the Muslim Brotherhood. During a town hall in Caro, El-Sayed explicitly disavowed the Islamist movement and criticized the implication that his Muslim faith suggests dual loyalties, stating that the U.S. Constitution is his guiding light.

The controversy has been fueled by resurfaced social media posts from his half-sister, Eman Abdelhadi, which discussed their mother's activism with the group in the 1970s. Additionally, reports have highlighted that El-Sayed's biological mother, Fatten Elkomy, was previously named in federal documents related to the Islamic American Relief Agency. El-Sayed has denied any personal or family ties to the organization.

In response to the political attacks, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has transferred $1 million to support El-Sayed's campaign, describing the allegations as smears. The Michigan Senate race remains highly competitive, with El-Sayed holding a narrow lead over Republican Mike Rogers in recent polling.

Other points of contention include revelations that El-Sayed's sister-in-law, Mariam Jukaku, was once placed on a federal terrorist watchlist, a claim El-Sayed defended by criticizing the reliability of the system. He also faces criticism regarding a 2011 research paper he co-authored concerning interethnic mating and pregnancy risks.
