Alexandru Baranyai, Lugoj photographer, passes away at 77

Alexandru Baranyai, a veteran photographer known locally in Lugoj as ‘Șoani’, has passed away at the age of 77. Born in Lugoj on December 28, 1948, Baranyai spent decades documenting the evolution of the city through various photographic mediums.

Throughout his career, he transitioned from film photography using cameras such as Smena 3, Zenit, and Pentax to modern digital technology. His work spanned press, artistic, and sports photography. Following 1990, he collaborated with several local publications, including Drapelul, Actualitatea, and Redeșteptarea, capturing community events, public spectacles, and daily life.

Beyond journalism, Baranyai was dedicated to preserving the visual history of Lugoj by recovering and restoring old photographs, providing significant historical and ethnographic value to the region.
