Alexandru Petrescu reports nine‑fold rise in active investment accounts in Romania

Romanian Financial Supervisory Authority (ASF) President Alexandru Petrescu said the number of active client accounts at investment service firms grew from 15,726 in March 2019 to 148,491 in March 2026 – an increase of about 9.4 times. During the same period, assets under custody rose from 8.73 billion lei to 63.75 billion lei, reflecting both new investor inflows and portfolio appreciation. Although the count of active accounts dipped slightly in 2023, the asset base continued to expand, indicating the market’s growing capacity to absorb capital.

Petrescu highlighted that Romania’s capital market is becoming broader and more visible, moving beyond a niche of specialists toward a mainstream investment option for a larger segment of citizens. He stressed the need for parallel advances in financial education, transparency, investor protection and service quality to sustain this quantitative growth and achieve durable market maturity.
