Alexia Putellas joins London City Lionesses
Alexia Putellas has joined the London City Lionesses after 14 seasons with FC Barcelona. The two-time Ballon d'Or winner signed a contract through 2029, opting for the London-based club over offers from major teams in England and the United States.
The signing has generated significant commercial interest, with the club reporting that season tickets for the 2026-2027 period sold out in record time. Putellas is part of a growing Spanish contingent at the club, which also includes Mapi León, Jana Fernández, María Pérez, and Lucía Corrales.
The London City Lionesses are owned by American entrepreneur Michele Kang, who is building a global women's football empire. In addition to the Lionesses, Kang owns the Washington Spirit in the United States and Olympique Lyonnais in France. Kang, who built her wealth through the sale of the healthcare technology firm Cognosante, is focusing her investments on expanding the reach and professionalization of women's football across multiple continents.
