Alexia Putellas signs with London City Lionesses while confirming safety in Venezuela
Spain's two‑time Ballon d'Or winner Alexia Putellas announced she will leave FC Barcelona after a 14‑year spell to join the Women's Super League side London City Lionesses on a two‑year contract. She said she chose the English club to stay close to home, turning down offers from the United States, and to remain competitive ahead of the upcoming World Cup.
The move was reported while Putellas was in Caracas, Venezuela, taking part in charity events with her foundation Eleven and the Monumental League. In an Instagram story she confirmed that she and her family were safe after two powerful earthquakes struck the capital, which have killed 164 people, injured about 1,000 and could cause many more casualties. She thanked supporters and expressed solidarity with the victims before flying to London for her official presentation.
London City Lionesses, owned by sports investor Michele Kang, have been building an ambitious squad and view the signing as a major boost to their profile in the WSL.
