Alexia Putellas signs with London City Lionesses, boosting WSL ambitions

Two‑time Ballon d’Or winner Alexia Putellas will leave Barcelona after a 14‑year spell to join England’s London City Lionesses in the Women’s Super League. Reports say the 32‑year‑old chose the club for its ambition, the chance to play weekly in a demanding league, proximity to family and the financial package on offer. Her arrival is expected to raise the team’s on‑field performance and attract greater media and commercial interest to the league.

London City Lionesses are also reinforcing their squad by extending the contract of English forward Freya Godfrey until 2029. Godfrey, a 21‑year‑old who helped the club reach a sixth‑place finish, praised the opportunity to train alongside established internationals and highlighted the upcoming addition of Putellas as a “unique chance”. The club’s recent signings signal a strategy of building continuity around a young, ambitious core.
