Alexis Konstantopoulos appointed EU delegation head in Libya

Greek diplomat Alexis Konstantopoulos has assumed leadership of the European Union delegation in Libya, succeeding Italian diplomat Nicola Orlando. His appointment, announced by the European External Action Service in June, comes at a critical time for European security, migration management, and geopolitical stability in the Mediterranean.

Konstantopoulos brings extensive experience in Middle Eastern and North African affairs, having previously served as the Greek ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Oman, and Yemen. He also served as a special representative for the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) and has worked within the Maghreb department of the European External Action Service.

A primary focus of his tenure will be the EU’s Operation Irini, which is tasked with enforcing the United Nations arms embargo in Libya. The mission utilizes aerial, satellite, and maritime assets to monitor and, under specific conditions, inspect vessels suspected of transporting weapons or related materials to or from Libyan territory.
