Alexis Tsipras positions Greek Left Coalition as alternative to New Democracy
Alexis Tsipras, leader of the Greek Left Coalition (ELAS), addressed the Attica Coordinating Committees, outlining the party's strategic goal to become a major political alternative to the ruling New Democracy party. Tsipras stated that the movement aims for comprehensive political change and a shift in the country's productive model, rather than merely securing parliamentary seats.
Tsipras criticized the Mitsotakis government's fiscal policies, alleging that the administration intentionally maintains budget surpluses of over 4% to use as 'election-targeted handouts' in the future. He argued these funds should instead be used immediately to mitigate the high cost of living, energy prices, and inflation affecting sectors such as transport, agriculture, and fishing.
Regarding organizational growth, Tsipras announced a shift toward establishing a physical presence in neighborhoods and workplaces to complement the party's digital engagement. He also claimed that the emergence of ELAS has disrupted the political landscape, forcing both the government and the traditional opposition to reconsider their strategies.
