Greek fishermen launch nationwide protests over rising fuel costs

Professional fishermen across Greece are engaging in widespread protests and blockades to demand relief from soaring fuel costs. In Thessaloniki, over 130 vessels have anchored along the old waterfront, with fishermen considering a full blockade of the port. Protesters report that maritime diesel prices have surged from approximately 0.59 euros per liter to over 1.40 euros, making their profession unsustainable.

Political figures have responded to the unrest. Nikos Androulakis, president of PASOK-KINAL, met with fishing representatives in Thessaloniki, urging the government to utilize the MedSAF program to subsidize up to 70% of fuel price increases. He also highlighted issues such as illegal fishing by third-party vessels in the Aegean and an aging fleet.

Former Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras also met with fishermen, describing the situation as a “signal of danger for the country.” He proposed a fuel price cap of 60 to 70 cents per liter and suggested that a state intervention costing 40 to 50 million euros could stabilize the sector. Fishermen have also raised concerns regarding the allocation of European funds, claiming resources intended for fisheries have been diverted elsewhere.
