Alexis Tsipras challenges Kyriakos Mitsotakis in first ELAS interview

Alexis Tsipras appeared at the 7th OT Forum, marking his first public intervention since announcing the creation of the ELAS party at Thiseio. Within two weeks the new party rose to second place in Greek opinion polls, overtaking PASOK and amassing about 30,000 members on its digital platform. In the interview Tsipras shifted from defending his past government (2015‑2019) to attacking the current administration, questioning the integrity and honesty of the New Democracy government and labeling Greece a “permanent client of the European Prosecutor.” He positioned himself as the principal alternative to Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, highlighting five priority actions he would take as prime minister, with the top priority being the fight against inflation. Mitsotakis, in a prior interview on Antenna, had claimed there were no funds for a 13th salary and struggled to explain a recent increase in metropolitan mayoral salaries. Tsipras also referenced the former premier’s comparison of Mitsotakis to a driver who lost his licence three times, countering that Mitsotakis has not broken any democratic rules during his tenure.
