Greece: Political tension rises over government scandals and economic measures

Greek political leaders are engaged in a sharp exchange regarding recent government scandals and economic policies. Alexis Tsipras, leader of the Hellenic Left Coalition, has used his weekly film recommendation to criticize Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. Referencing the classic Greek comedy “Phonazei o Kleftis” (The Thief Cries Out), Tsipras alleged that recent investigations into cases such as “Mr. Choriatiko” and “Pizza Fan” represent a pattern of fraud that burdens ordinary citizens.

In response to his weekly review, Prime Minister Mitsotakis outlined several government initiatives. These include the extension of fuel subsidies until November 15, providing relief for heating oil, diesel, and gasoline. He also highlighted the “Home Renovation” program, which offers subsidies for housing improvements, and discussed maritime security following his participation in a UN Security Council meeting. Mitsotakis reaffirmed Greece’s stance against the Turkey-Libya memorandum, asserting that international law must protect the rights of Greek islands.

Opposition from SYRIZA has criticized the government’s approach, arguing that temporary fuel subsidies do not address the underlying cost-of-living crisis. The party has called for permanent measures, such as reducing the Special Consumption Tax and taxing refinery excess profits, rather than relying on short-term aid.
