Alexis Tsipras launches ELAS and pledges government within months

Former prime‑minister Alexis Tsipras held the first open rally of the newly created Greek Left Alliance (ELAS) in Nicаia, near the historic Kokkinias district. He declared that ELAS became a parliamentary opposition in 24 hours and that it could become the government within a few months. Tsipras outlined five programme pillars: long‑term fixed‑price electricity contracts, a public agency to refinance high‑interest “red” loans, free public‑transport for socially‑disadvantaged groups, abolition of the Pan‑Hellenic exams, and higher wages for health‑care and education staff. He criticised the current government’s handling of corruption, cost‑of‑living and the “stability vs. progress” narrative.

The party’s poll showing ELAS in second place was noted, and Tsipras announced the 3rd International Conference of the Tsipras Institute, to be held in Nicosia, Cyprus. The conference will feature economist Tomás Piket, former Chilean defence minister Maya Aliente, and other progressive speakers, focusing on economic patriotism, democratic renewal, human‑rights issues and the Gaza conflict.

ELAS also lodged a formal complaint against Finance Minister Kyriakos Pierrakas for allegedly rewriting history about the 2015 debt crisis, positioning the new coalition as a force for “justice and integrity” in Greek politics.
