Alexis Tsipras' ELAS surges in polls and pledges to govern Greece

Former prime minister Alexis Tsipras has used his first televised interview since launching the Greek Left Alliance (ELAS) to announce that the party aims to govern, not merely serve as opposition. He ruled out any pre‑election alliance with his former party Syriza, saying the latter’s political cycle is closed and that ELAS will seek a governing mandate on its own platform.

A recent RealPolls survey shows ELES rising to second place with 21.4% support, trailing New Democracy’s 28.3% and overtaking traditional opposition PASOK. The poll reflects a gain of more than five points since May and indicates a tightening two‑pole contest in Greece. Tsipras said the movement would form a coalition if it wins a plurality, or push for a snap second election if negotiations stall.

He also outlined policy proposals, including a “patriotic contribution” on the wealthiest 1 % and profitable corporations to fund free public transit in Athens and Thessaloniki and higher pay for doctors and teachers, while rejecting new taxes on low‑ and middle‑income households.
