Alexis Tsipras' ELAS unveils energy, housing and university reforms in Greece

Former prime minister Alexis Tsipras, now leader of the newly formed Greek Left Alliance (ELAS), outlined a programme that includes a stable electricity price set in cooperation with the public utility DEH, a fund to renegotiate "red" loans for households, and measures to protect the first home of borrowers. He also called for free public‑transport tickets for residents and workers in Athens and Thessaloniki and advocated replacing the nationwide university entrance exams with a "National Diploma" system modeled on Germany.

During a launch event in Nikaias, Tsipras declared that ELAS had become an "official opposition" within 24 hours and warned that the current government’s policies represent "instability" rather than stability. He said the party aims to become government in the next election, presenting the reforms as a contrast to what he described as corruption and fiscal mismanagement.

The proposals target cost‑of‑living pressures, aiming to lower energy bills, ease loan burdens, improve public transport accessibility, and reform higher‑education admissions.
