Greece faces domestic political friction and Turkish provocations

In Greece, political tensions are rising on two fronts: domestic competition within the center-left and regional friction with Turkey.

Alexis Tsipras, leader of the Hellenic Left Symparataxia, has sought to lower tensions with PASOK leader Nikos Androulakis. During a visit to Crete, Tsipras stated that his true political opponent is Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, rather than other progressive forces. He emphasized that while his party and PASOK are competitors, they must find common ground to form a progressive government. However, friction remains, with Tsipras claiming that ‘7 in 10 positions of PASOK officials are against the Hellenic Left Symparataxia.’

Simultaneously, PASOK has focused on economic policy, with Nikos Androulakis presenting a legislative proposal to address private debt. The plan includes measures such as 120 installments and protections for primary residences, criticizing the current government's handling of the issue.

On the international stage, Devlet Bahçeli, leader of Turkey's Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), issued a provocative challenge to Athens. He asserted that Greece cannot feel secure regardless of its alliances or military acquisitions unless it builds friendly relations with its neighbors and recognizes Turkish rights and the sovereignty of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.
