Alexis Tsipras launches new Greek Left Alliance amid internal criticism

Former prime minister Alexis Tsipras has introduced a new political formation, the Greek Left Alliance (ELAS), positioning it as a fresh start for the centre‑left. The party was presented in May 2026 with a rebranded name, logo and a set of seven core commitments, aiming to broaden its appeal beyond the legacy of SYRIZA.

SYRIZA members, notably parliamentary group leader Rena Dourou, have warned that the rebranding is fragile, describing internal “splits” and questioning how new the movement can truly be. Critics also point to ELAS’s lack of experienced candidates, arguing that the party’s promise of a clean slate may prove electorally risky without established local figures.

Analysts suggest the venture could reshape Greece’s opposition landscape, but its success will depend on whether Tsipras can translate the new brand into voter support in upcoming elections.
