Alexis Tsipras launches new left alliance ELAS ahead of September campaign
Former Greek prime minister Alexis Tsipras has re‑entered the political arena with the creation of a new left‑wing formation called ELAS (Greek Left Alliance). Early polling shows the nascent party drawing support mainly from the fragmented centre‑left and broader left, but its numbers remain below those once achieved by SYRIZA under Tsipras. The party unveiled a detailed government programme at the Thessaloniki International Fair, positioning itself as a prospective governing alternative rather than merely an opposition pole.
ELAS emphasizes a nationwide organisational push, using an online platform that already lists over 30,000 participants. The platform will enable members to submit proposals, vote on key issues and help set up regional committees and political offices. Party officials say the goal is to reshape the opposition landscape and present a clear vision for governing the country.
