Alexis Tsipras' New Party Triggers Syriza Dissolution in Greece

Former prime minister Alexis Tsipras is establishing a new political party in which he will retain full control, moving away from the coalition‑type structure that previously defined Syriza. According to former New Democracy minister Makis Voridis, this development signals the gradual liquidation of Syriza and the emergence of a single dominant pole on the opposition side.

The Greek Left Alliance (EL A.S.) has been launched as an open, non‑hierarchical platform that invites any progressive citizen to join without pre‑assigned parliamentary seats or privileged positions. Its founding declaration calls for a “pan‑front” of democratic and progressive forces outside parliament, aiming to rebuild a strong left‑wing alternative to the governing New Democracy party.

Reports indicate that many Syriza members and elected officials are already shifting to the new initiative, weakening the original party’s organisational base while Tsipras seeks to consolidate support ahead of the 2027 elections.
