Alexis Tsipras outlines ELAS agenda and Cyprus solution in talks with EU ambassadors

Former Greek prime minister and ELAS leader Alexis Tsipras met ambassadors from Norway, the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, Spain, Denmark and the Netherlands. He presented the goals of his new political formation, ELAS, and highlighted priorities for domestic political change.

Tsipras called for a fair and sustainable resolution to the Cyprus issue based on the Gueterre framework, a bi‑zonal bi‑communal federation, the removal of Turkish occupation forces and the revocation of guarantees. He urged Turkey to commit to dialogue under international law and to seek Hague arbitration over continental‑shelf and EEZ delimitation. The discussion revived his 2021 proposal to link the EU‑Turkey customs union to progress on Greek‑Turkish relations and the Cyprus settlement.

He also pressed for a stronger EU role, including activation of Article 42.7 of the Lisbon Treaty, greater defence capabilities, and coordinated action on inflation, cohesion funding, the Common Agricultural Policy, expanded joint borrowing and EU resources. A comprehensive European migration policy based on fair burden‑sharing and effective returns was advocated. Tsipras was accompanied by diplomatic adviser Dimitris Papageorgiou and ELAS co‑founder Haris Zimitras.
