Alex Tsipras launches ELAS left alliance at Cyprus conference, eyes 2023 elections

Former Greek prime minister Alex Tsipras travelled to Nicosia for the third International Conference of the Institute of Alex Tsipras (INAT). The event, themed “Economic patriotism, democracy and human rights”, brought together Greek, Cypriot and international speakers, including former Chilean Senate president Maya Aliende and economist Tomá Pikeť. Tsipras met Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides and leaders of the Turkish‑Cypriot community, stressing a message of peace and cooperation.

During the conference Tsipras presented the programme of the newly formed Greek Left Alliance (ELAS), describing it as a convergence of social‑democratic, radical left and ecological currents. He said, “The momentum has already been created – it will not be a walk‑over for Mitsotakis,” and added that “the elections will be a derby, we are going down to win.” The speaker highlighted ELAS’s aim to become a governing alternative to New Democracy, positioning the alliance as a progressive force for workers, the vulnerable and the broader society.

The visit marks Tsipras’s first trip abroad since founding ELAS and is intended to raise the alliance’s profile ahead of the upcoming Greek parliamentary elections.
