Alexis Tsipras pledges teacher salary hikes and abolition of Panhellenic exams in Greece

Former prime minister and leader of the Greek Left Unity (ELAS), Alexis Tsipras, announced a package of education reforms via a video on social media. He committed to raising salaries for primary and secondary teachers, adding financial incentives for educators serving in remote or high‑cost areas, and to eliminating the Panhellenic university entrance exams, which he described as a source of severe stress for students.

Tsipras also proposed restructuring higher education, including the creation of a separate Ministry of Research, Innovation and Tertiary Education, upgrading technical training with two‑year post‑secondary programmes, and strengthening ties between universities and industry. He criticized the current government's policies, citing the 2019 closure of the public Law School in Patras and the growth of private law schools, and said his goal is to make knowledge a right for all Greeks.
