Alexis Tsipras positions new ELAS party to challenge Greek political leadership

Alexis Tsipras is positioning his new political formation, ELAS, to challenge the existing political order in Greece. Recent polling indicates New Democracy leads with approximately 25% of the voting intention, followed by Tsipras's ELAS at 15.2%, while PASOK trails at 9.7%.

Tsipras aims to establish ELAS as the primary pole of the progressive camp rather than merely a collection of defecting officials. To maintain the image of a fresh political entity, he is reportedly avoiding mass recruitment from SYRIZA and the New Left, opting instead for a limited number of carefully selected experienced figures. Olga Gerovasilis has been identified as a potential candidate for the Arta district.

The political landscape is expected to clarify further in the autumn following the Thessaloniki International Fair, as parties present their formal policy platforms.
