ELAS party sets candidate list as PASOK rules out coalition with New Democracy

The PASOK – Movement for Change party condemned the European Commission’s referral of Greece to the EU Court over alleged discrimination against substitute teachers, demanding immediate legal equality with permanent staff. PASOK also reiterated its refusal to cooperate with the ruling New Democracy party, positioning itself as the sole opposition force.

Former SYRIZA MP Kateryna Notopoulou resigned from parliament and joined the newly formed ELAS (United Left and Solidarity) party, which is now assembling its electoral slate. ELAS plans to draw roughly 300 candidates from its founding declaration and additional members, emphasizing fresh faces and avoiding the recycling of existing parliamentarians. The first names are expected to appear in late August or early September, ahead of the autumn elections.

Alexis Tsipras, former prime minister, has returned to public political activity, promoting a “new cycle” for ELAS while reflecting on past governance. Meanwhile, SYRIZA’s Central Committee is set to debate its strategic stance towards Tsipras’s initiative, with internal disagreements over whether to maintain an autonomous electoral path or join a broader progressive front.
