Alexis Tsipras targets political leadership and tax reform in Greece

Alexis Tsipras, leader of the Greek Left Coalition (EL.A.S.), has expressed optimism regarding his party's potential to become the leading political force in upcoming parliamentary elections. Tsipras stated that his return to active politics is driven by the specific goal of achieving first place and securing governance. He suggested that a second round of elections could serve as a “turnover,” potentially allowing EL.A.S. to overtake New Democracy if they secure a strong performance, specifically targeting a threshold above 20% in the first round.

Regarding economic policy, Tsipras denied allegations of planned tax increases on businesses and the middle class. He proposed the abolition of the professional fee (telos epithedeumatos), arguing the current flat rate is illogical for small businesses. Instead, he emphasized a strategy of taxing wealth while providing tax relief for entrepreneurship.

Tsipras also criticized the current administration, citing Eurostat data to claim that tax revenues from VAT and income have grown at rates significantly higher than GDP growth. He argued that the Mitsotakis government has disproportionately increased the tax burden on citizens.
