Greek Left Unity (ELAS) unveils 400‑plus member National Council
The Greek Left Alliance (ELAS), led by former prime minister Alexis Tsipras, announced the full composition of its newly created National Council. The body consists of 400 members plus one chair, drawn from a wide cross‑section of society – students, young scientists, workers, entrepreneurs, farmers, economists, trade‑unionists, local‑government officials, health‑care professionals, educators, cultural and sports figures.
The list, made public a few weeks after the Council’s first meeting, includes former SYRIZA politicians such as ex‑Euro‑MP Petros Kokkalis, former MP Panagiota Dritseli and former labour ministry secretary Andreas Nefeloudis, as well as PASOK regional councillor Harīs Liourīs and several ex‑ministers (e.g., Kostas Gavroglou, Michailos Kalogirou, George Vasileiadis, Dimitris Liakos). Alexis Tsipras is named President of the Council.
ELAS describes the Council as a new collective political structure intended to formulate policy proposals through direct citizen participation, positioning the party as a broad‑based, open‑door movement rather than a traditional party hierarchy.
