Alexis Tsipras unveils new party EL.AS, pledges tax focus on top 1% and aims to lead government

Former prime minister Alexis Tsipras announced the creation of a new political formation called EL.AS (ΕΛ. Α. Σ). He said the party aims to become the leading force in the forthcoming national elections and to form a government, rejecting pre‑reserved candidate slots and inviting former SYRIZA members to join on equal terms. The party has already set up a shadow cabinet and a national council to prepare for governance.

Tsipras asserted that no new taxes will be levied on low, middle or high incomes. Instead, he proposed a “patriotic contribution” that would target the richest 1 % of individuals and highly profitable enterprises, describing it as a way to fund health, education and anti‑corruption measures. He also hinted at a possible increase in dividend taxes. If EL.AS cannot secure a governing majority after the first election, the party will seek a second‑round election to pursue its programme.
