Alexis Tsipras uses film recommendations to critique Greek current affairs
Alexis Tsipras, leader of the Greek Left Coalition (EL.A.S.), has launched a new weekly social media initiative where he recommends a film as a way to comment on political and social developments. For his inaugural selection, Tsipras proposed Francis Ford Coppola’s ‘The Godfather’, using the film to draw parallels to recent news stories.
The specific cases cited by Tsipras include a large-scale tax evasion investigation involving a major catering chain, allegations of bribery and match-fixing within Greek basketball, and a 200,000 euro subsidy granted to a company owned by New Democracy MP Spyros Koulkoudinas for maritime tourism in Pieria.
The initiative prompted a sharp response from government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis, who accused the former Prime Minister of blurring the lines between cinema and reality. Marinakis suggested that Tsipras should instead look to the film ‘There is Philotimo’ to reflect on his own political legacy, arguing that the current administration is simply responding to illegalities uncovered by existing oversight mechanisms.
