Alfa Romeo Alfasud: Technical innovation marred by quality issues

The Alfa Romeo Alfasud, produced between 1972 and 1983, is noted for its advanced technical conception but suffered significant reputational damage due to severe quality and manufacturing flaws.

Reports indicate that the vehicle faced chronic issues with rust, poor workmanship, and inferior materials. One specific manufacturing error involved foaming car body cavities for soundproofing, which inadvertently trapped moisture and accelerated corrosion. These defects led to widespread criticism, including the derisive nickname ‘Alfa Rosteo’.

Labor relations at the Pomigliano d’Arco plant also played a critical role in the model's struggles. The factory experienced over 700 strikes during its twelve years of production. Historical accounts suggest that frequent industrial actions and inconsistent work ethics contributed to assembly errors, such as the alleged ‘white series’ where weathered, rusted body shells were reportedly painted and sold.

Despite these challenges, the Alfasud remains one of Alfa Romeo’s most produced models, with over one million units manufactured.
